Game Ranger and Safari Guide
In May 2006 I was lucky to go to South Africa for 14 weeks and train and work as a Field Guide/
Game Ranger, achieving a lifetime ambition. I took guests on game drives into Kruger Park and
worked with 2 trained elephants for elephant backed safaris. I returned in 2007 for 6 months,
working on the reserve and going on short trips to Mozambique, Swaziland and many exciting
wildlife encounters.
I became familiar with the behaviour of many species including lion, elephant and leopard and enjoyed passing this experience onto my guests and giving them the most memorable and rich encounters that I could. The knowledge I gained through this practical training and working was equivalent to FGASA Level 1 and 2, although I did not take the professional exams due to work permit restrictions and commitments in the UK.
Jan 2007 to June 2007 – Kwa Madwala Private Game Reserve, South Africa
Game Ranger and GapYear coordinator
Daily game drives, leading bush walks, rhino walks, teaching bird and tree species with a tracker, leading short trips to Mozambique, Swaziland, Kruger National Park, camping and walking excursions on and off the reserve.

Game Ranger Training / Working
6 weeks practical training, daily walks and drives, skills such as tracking, 4x4 driving, guest etiquette, 100 tree species, 120 bird species, animal behaviour. Walks included rhino and lion walks in close proximity of both species.
8 weeks working as a field guide / game ranger on the reserve. I took up to 9 guests on morning and afternoon game drives in open top 4x4 land cruisers, driving ‘off road’ to gain close proximity to lions, rhinos and other game species. I took guests into Kruger Park in private vehicles and was able to see the big 5 on a regular basis as well as African wild dog and cheetah. I spent a week working with 2 trained African elephants and enjoyed many interactions and experiences with them throughout my stay.
